Step 1: Determine Your Giving Preference – Part 1

A traditional endowment or legacy fund – managed for impact that will last forever. (An endowment is a fund established with donated assets that are invested to offer long-term support for a specific charitable organization or cause. Each year, a portion of the fund is distributed to support charitable activities, while the remaining assets stay invested to ensure growth over time. Endowment funds can be tailored to align with a donor’s charitable goals. Our traditional endowments are managed for impact that will last forever.)

A spend-down fund – these funds function similarly to the endowment as described above, but they are managed for impact that will last a specific period (i.e. 5, 10, or 20 years). Spend-down funds make a great choice for donors who want their donation and impact activated in the community sooner, but want to see the donation last for a while.

An immediate or flow through gift – for donors who want to make an impact right away.

Which fund type aligns best with your charitable vision?

Community Legacy Fund: We refer to this fund as ”The Heart of our Foundation.” The beauty of this fund is that it evolves with the ever-changing needs of our community and is the primary funding source for our annual community grants program. This fund provides the Foundation with the flexibility to disburse grants to the widest possible range of initiatives.

Donor Advised Fund: Fundholders retain the responsibility for making annual grant recommendations in support of the charities, causes, and/or programs of their choice. With this flexible option, you can change your preference from year to year.

Donor Designated Fund: This fund is created to support a specific charity or organization. Donors are required to decide in advance which charity or organization they wish to support.

Field of Interest Fund: Donors identify a charitable cause that is close to their hearts and every year disbursements are allocated to support that cause.

Scholarship or Bursary Fund: Annual disbursements are used to provide scholarships and bursaries to students, typically those pursuing post-secondary learning opportunities.

Agency Fund: This fund is usually created by a charity to support its own work. It provides a stable and sustainable source of core operational revenue for the organization that creates it.

Step 8: Consider Your Donation Amount

How much would you like to donate?

A gift can be made to an existing fund in any amount, and a new fund can be established as an emerging fund with as little as a $1,000 donation. An emerging fund can then be kept as a ‘placeholder’ with a donor’s pledge to add to it later, including through a Will/bequest. Alternatively, a fund can be fully activated with a $5,000 donation and will begin distributing annual grants once it reaches around the $10,000 level.

We are working towards building our own source of stable and sustainable revenue so that we may reduce the annual administration fees charged to endowed funds.

We work hard to keep our fees low (currently just 1.5-2.0%) but we’d like to be able to reduce or eliminate them entirely. This would grow our own capacity, while allowing us to deliver more generous distributions to our Sunshine Coast Community every year. Would you be interested in allocating a portion of your donation to support our operations or grow our Sunshine Coast Foundation operating endowment?
